WORLD SAREE DAY MALAYSIA (WSDM) CHARITY HI-TEA WITH THE DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA (PSDM)

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 March 2023 - World Saree Day Malaysia (WSDM) came together with The Down Syndrome Association of Malaysia (PSDM) in an art and cultural charity event that was held at Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, Menara Kembar Bank Rakyat, Kuala Lumpur on 19 March 2023, supported by the National Arts and Culture Department (JKKN) and the High Commission of India.

The objective of this event is to give awareness to the public and to educate them about the uniqueness of Saree as well as to channel some proceeds as a donation to PDSM in order to support their expenses. 


The event was graced by the H.E. of the High Commissioner of India, Mr. Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy. Orphanages and chidren’s homes from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak istimewa Lagenda and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Lindungan Ikhlas also attended the event in the spirit of learning about the cultural heritage of Saree. 

PSDM is a non-profit organisation, established in 2001, has a charitable volunteer that takes care of the development and fights for the rights of individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) for the whole of Malaysia through the perspective of health, welfare, education, vocational career training, and employment.


World Saree Day Malaysia gave proceeds as a donation to PSDM to heip obtain additional equipment, vocational career training expenses, and tools in order to help the members of the association to become independent and successful entrepreneurs in the near future. 

In this moder era, specifically, the Indian culture of Saree among Malaysians is increasingly being forgotten and is often modernised. As Malaysia is a multicultural country with many different ethnic groups and cultures that have existed for many centuries, WSDM aims to bring @ social impact to the community by giving exposure through the awareness of this event in hopes to encourage the young generations to continue to love and appreciate the art and culture of various races in Malaysia. 


Over 60 Sarees of various materials, textiles, and draping styles were showcased in a fashion show with the participation of 10 experienced models from PDSM, thie has indirectly given the opportunity for people with Down syndrome to enhance thei self-development.

A unque traditional Khatak dance performed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (NSCBICC) was also presented where the dancers narrate stories through their eyes and expressions. 


Besides that, there are many different types of Sarees with a variety of materials, designs, and draping styles, which are worn to suit different occasions across India. Bharat club Kuala Lumpur showcased 30 different Saree materials and draping styles from 30 states (south to north India) as a way to educate people on the uniqueness and interesting facts about Sarees. 

We choose to educate about the cultural heritage of Saree because there are many interesting facts to It, one of which being there are different varieties of Sarees, materials, and textiles across India, and there are various ways of draping the saree. It has been recorded that there are a total of 108 ways of wearing a Saree which makes & unique.” said Bkay Nair, Director of World Saree Day. 

Bkay Nair Is also the Director of Bkay Nair Resources (BNR), @ training provider and event company that has personally trained many in becoming successful entrepreneurs, wellequipped in communication and career development. 

A philanthropist at heart, she has involved herself in many events and programme doing social service for women and children in need through Soroptimist International Ampang and World Hijab Day International which is what inspired Bkay to initiate this current charity event. 

World Saree Day Malaysia (WSDM) strives to preserve the diverse cultures of the many races in Malaysia, as well as to encourage people of the public to wear their respective traditional clothes to forge unity among the various races while cultivating the spirit of love and respect specifically for the Indian culture of Saree among the current generation so that it is not forgotten. 

A lucky draw was included in the event, offering many attractive prizes including exclusive Sarees, accessories, gold coins, and a trip to Langkawi.

About The Down Sindrome Association of Malaysia (PSDM)
PSDM was established on 11th May 2001, is a National Voluntary Organisation (NVO) which looks after the well-being of individuals with Down Syndrome and their families throughout Malaysia from the perspectives of welfare, health, education & training, vocational/work skills and employment as well as living independently (with assistance) in communities. Also, as a NVO, PSDM is non-profit making and all contribution of funds are used for the benefit of our children with Down Syndrome.
