KUALA LUMPUR, 2nd August 2022 — Malaysia's Comedy Sweetheart Joanne Kam Poh Poh is set to rock the Pentas 1, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) this 30th September and 1st October with a restaging of her 90-minute, critically acclaimed show La La Lian!
The show made its debut in 2018 and featured a sold-out Nationwide Tour in over 5 cities! A One Woman Comedy Special, La La Lian! 2.0 tells the story of Kam Poh Poh, an odd looking, shy girl with a big heart and an even bigger appetite. The journey she took from growing up in Penang, Ipoh and Johor Bahru that led to her induction into the world of entertainment. Chronicling her 30 years in the industry from the dim lit backstages of Haw Par Villa, to her rise to Comedic Stardom at the Boom Boom Room, to the empowering Super Kam (all femme comedy series) and now, revisiting an already successful nationwide tour.
Unlike anything Joanne has done before, this time, she promises more personal, no-holds barred truths about the trials and tribulations of growing up to become one of Malaysia’s icons of comedy, juggling laughter between heartaches, headaches and fluctuating body weight, juggling a career and unexpected motherhood, all while finding family in a community that society wants to shut out.
“So this is a rerun of my 2018 one woman show with the same name, LA LA LIAN, but an expanded version, kind of like a “Directors Cut” version as I will be updating the script a bit. I realised with the first Nationwide Tour in 2018 and the rerun at BOBO KL in June 2022 (all to SOLD OUT AUDIENCES) that there was still a demand and more importantly, a need for this
particular artform. Also with the current “situation” happening within the Comedy industry, clearly there are existing fans and new audiences that are waiting to witness and understand this form of art,” said the Stand-up Comedy Heavyweight adding that stand-up comedy is an artform.
“I stress on the word ART! The basis of comedy has always been about heightening the truth in order to reflect the society in which the comedian is in. Most of our stories are based on our own life & our experiences. Living and growing up in a multicultural country allow us to experience a very unique upbringing that is wholly inclusive of each other's community.
Most of these include how we view ourselves and at times our neighbours and friends. If you put a gag order on comedy it's like telling a singer he cannot write songs about a journey that he is going through.”
Featuring new add on material, JOANNE KAM - LA LA LIAN 2.0 also aims to inspire girls and women as it addresses the issues of weight, body image, self-confidence and promotes self-discovery. Joanne’s struggles, accomplishments, and achievements are just the tip of the
